Exercise 1.3 – Line

THE BRIEF: Take a number of shots using lines to create a sense of depth. Shooting with a wide- angle lens (zooming out) strengthens a diagonal line by giving it more length within the frame. The effect is dramatically accentuated if you choose a viewpoint close to the line. Now take a number of shots using lines to flatten the pictorial space. To avoid the effects of perspective, the sensor/film plane should be parallel to the subject and you may like to try a high viewpoint (i.e. looking down). Review your shots from both parts of Exercise 1.3.

A Sense of Depth

A Flattened Space

This specific exercise I actually found a tad more difficult than others. While I felt it was easy to find straight lines and make them appear with depth, it took me a lot more thinking to take objects of depth and make them appear flat. I focused on the roundness of a tree’s trunk and the lines that appear in it, to try and make the image show flattened by zooming in as much as I could while keeping the image clear. My second image features a leaf with holes in it. While this may not seem something that would cover this topic, the individual lines of the leaf and the holes themselves give a view through to the earth below. The leaf itself was curved off the ground initially, so taking a photo of it directly above made it flat.
